Hans Willenpart

Hans Willenpart (* 1927 in Scheibbs ; † 1979 ) was an Austrian mountaineer .

The Matterhorn

In 1954, Willenpart climbed the Matterhorn over the north face together with Josef Larch and Leo Forstenlechner .

The Gasherbrum II

In 1956, the Austrian Himalaya Society decided to attempt a first ascent of Gasherbrum II . In addition to Hans Willenpart, Fritz Moravec and Josef Larch were selected for the team.

The tour began with an 11-day cruise which ended in Karachi , Pakistan . From there it went by train to Rawalpindi 1,500 km away . From there they flew on to Skardu with a DC3 . The exploration of the mountain began in June 1956, and the south-west route was chosen. The base camp was set up at an altitude of 6,800 meters. The summit of the mountain was reached on July 7, 1956.

Appreciation

Willenpart comes from Scheibbs and was also an honorary citizen of the city after this success.
