Josef Larch

Josef "Sepp" Larch (born July 28, 1930 in Sterzing ; † October 7, 2011 in Weyer (Upper Austria) ) was an Upper Austrian mountaineer . He was mainly known for the first ascent of the 8,034  m high Gasherbrum II .

Life

Sepp Larch lived in Weyer im Ennstal since the early 1940s . He started climbing at the age of nineteen and in the 50's he was one of the most distinguished European mountaineers.

In 1950 Larch and Kajetan Uriach were the first to climb the direct north face of the Peternschartenkopf in the Gesäuse , and in 1954, together with Leo Forstenlechner, they were the first to climb the Dachl-Rosskuppen intersection, at that time regarded as one of the most difficult routes in the Eastern Alps. He also climbed the north faces of the Eiger (1952 with Karl Winter from Scheibbs as seventh) and Matterhorn (1954 with Hans Willenpart and Leo Forstenlechner as eighth). In 1956 he was part of the Austrian expedition that managed the first ascent of Gasherbrum II. On July 7, 1956, he stood on the summit with Fritz Moravec and Hans Willenpart . In 1971 he was the first to climb the Mercedario south face with Hans Mautner and Hans Schönberger and crossed the two peaks of Pico Polaco in the Andes with Kurt Elbl (Friends of Nature Alpinist Guild) and Hans Schönberger .

In 1962 he was a consultant for the film His best friend from Luis Trenker .

Sepp Larch had been married since October 1962 and had a son.
