Life

Hans Wolfsbauer-Schönau was born on December 28, 1925 in Schönau an der Triesting in Lower Austria. He grew up in Bad Gastein, where his father was a renowned photographer. Renowned artists such as Alfons Walde , Luigi Kasimir and Karl Heinrich Waggerl frequented his parents' house . He attended boarding school in the teacher's house in Salzburg Leopoldskron and recognized his calling for architecture and painting early on. As a high school student he kept a “diary in pictures”. He studied in Salzburg, Kreuzberg and Vienna and became a civil engineer. After graduating, he worked as a freelance architect and for leading architecture firms in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In 1961 he took over the construction planning of Innsbruck Airport as well as the project planning and execution of larger residential and commercial buildings.

As a result, he shifted more and more to the field of interior design and dealt intensively with painting and graphics. He became known through his exhibitions "Motifs from the Alpine Region as Art Motifs" and his three-dimensional works, "Stereoism". He is considered to be one of the founders of "plastic painting", in which plastic or three-dimensional paintings were created through the use of new materials. After the great success of his first solo exhibition “Welt und Weltall” in 1977 in the Innsbruck Congress Center , which was seen by 10,000 visitors, he decided to devote his life only to painting. Numerous exhibitions followed. Wolfsbauer-Schönau has also created an extremely extensive oeuvre dedicated to the city and state of Salzburg over all creative periods . His works all bear an unmistakable signature and are, as it were, “composed” - powerful and economical in the line, space, structure and color become one.

Wolfsbauer-Schönau is considered a master of architecture and oil graphics, in the field of which he set new international standards. His work can be found in many public and private collections at home and abroad.

In 2003, Federal President Thomas Klestil awarded him the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class . The artist worked with undiminished creativity until shortly before his death on July 25, 2005.
