Hanzo Lehmann

Hanzo Lehmann ( de : Hans Lehmann ; * around 1690 ; † around 1721 ) was a Sorbian farmer leader and village mayor in the village of Eichow .

Hanzo Lehmann was one of the leaders of the peasant uprising from 1715 to 1717 in the Cottbus district . This uprising was one of the largest and most significant uprisings of Sorbian and German farmers in Prussia in the 18th century and is one of the most progressive and revolutionary traditions in Sorbian history.

In July 1715 he and other people decided to complain directly to the Prussian king about the social situation of the Lusatian population. The king had Hanzo Lehmann arrested, which happened in August 1715. He was released in 1717 with the promise that he would no longer express himself critical. But because of the still desolate situation of the Sorbian and German farmers, more than 4,000 armed farmers gathered in Raddusch under Lehmann's leadership . There was u. a. decided not to do any more forced labor. Hanzo Lehmann was arrested again and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Küstrin fortress . Despite several requests for clemency from his wife (the last in 1721), he was not released. Hanzo Lehmann died in custody.
