Haplochromis stappersii ( synonym : Astatotilapia stappersii ) is a species of cichlid that occurs in East Africa.

features

Like all haplochromine cichlids, H. stappersii is a mouthbrooder , with only females picking up the brood. Males have eggspots on their anal fins, which are bright orange in H. stappersii . Adults can reach a body length of 15 cm.

Common color phenotypes in Haplochromis are the bluish and yellowish phenotypes, with H. stappersii belonging to the bluish type.

Way of life

H. stappersii occurs in the catchment area of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi , the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania , and in Zambia , with the exception of the Malagarasi river region. The cichlid species inhabit slowly flowing rivers, swamps, small freshwater lakes and inland deltas . H. stappersii feeds mainly on aquatic insect larvae.

According to the IUCN , H. stappersii is common and widespread and is therefore classified as a non-threatened species. However, stocks are threatened locally by habitat destruction, water pollution and overfishing  .

Systematics

The cichlid species was described as Haplochromis stappersii by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1943 . Terra typica is the Lufuku , a river in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , which flows into Lake Tanganyika . Like many other fluvatile cichlids of the haplochromine basic blueprint, the species is now classified in many sources in the genus Astatotilapia . However, it belongs to the "Lake Victoria region super flock" that is the Cichlidenradiation that in Victoria , in Lake Kivu , in Lake Albert , in Lake Edward , in Lake George , the Lake Kyoga , in Turkana , in the Lake Rukwa and lake nabugabo occurs almost exclusively of the genus Haplochromis is assigned. It is the only species in this group in the Lake Tanganyika catchment area. In the Catalog of Fishes it is listed again today as Haplochromis stappersii . It is still not certain whether H. stappersii is a monotypic species or whether several species are grouped under the name.
