Haptanthus hazlettii is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Haptanthus , which alone forms the family of the Haptanthaceae .

description

inflorescence

Haptanthus hazlettii is an evergreen tree . The alternate leaves are simple and the leaf margin is smooth. Stipules are absent.

It is a monoecious getrenntgeschlechtige ( monoecious ) Art. There are axillary zymöse inflorescences , formed with the female flowers in the center. Bloom are not available. There are two stamens in each flower, but it looks like there is only one, with wide stamens. The three carpels are to a predominantly upper permanent ovary grown, with three styluses . Fruits and seeds are not known.

Systematics and botanical history

Haptanthus hazlettii was probably first described in 1989 by Goldberg and Nelson on the basis of a specimen collected by Hazletti in 1980. The only information about the location is: 5 km southeast of Matarras, Municipio Arizona, Atlántida ; there have been several failed attempts to find this species in Honduras . It was not until 2010 that another specimen was discovered in Honduras, on the basis of which genetic tests could also be carried out.

The incorporation of the Haptanthaceae family is unclear. One suspects possible relationships in the families of the Buxaceae , Salicaceae and Lacistemataceae .
