Haraella retro calla is the only species of the genus Haraella from the family of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). It is endemic to the island of Taiwan and wasdescribedas Saccolabium retrocallum by Hayata Bunzō asearly as 1914. It is also placed as Gastrochilus retrocallus (Hayata) Hayata in the genus Gastrochilus .
description
Haraella retrocalla is a small, epiphytic plant. It is characterized by a short monopodial stem axis on which several sickle-shaped leaves are attached. The flower shoot arises laterally from the stem axis and forms a few flowers. The flowers have a large lip with a characteristic, velvety red spot in their center. The faint scent of the flowers is reminiscent of lemon.
distribution
The species grows in deciduous forests of Taiwan at an altitude between 500 m and 1500 m. The flowering period extends from July to November, with the main flowering period being in the autumn months. According to R. Govaerts, the species also occurs on the Nansei island Iriomote .
