Harald Bergström (born April 1, 1908 in Mölltorp ; † May 23, 2001 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish mathematician . He mainly worked in the field of probability theory .

Live and act

Harald Bergström studied mathematics, physics and chemistry at Uppsala University and obtained his master’s degree in 1931. From 1932 to 1934 he taught at high schools and then worked as a research assistant at Uppsala University, where he received his doctorate in 1938 and taught until 1945.

In 1946 he moved to the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, where he was appointed professor of applied mathematics in 1949 . In 1960 his professorship was extended to two chairs for numerical analysis and mathematical statistics . In 1974 he retired .

Scientific work

During his work at Uppsala University, Harald Bergström mainly dealt with algebraic number fields and related topics. After moving to Chalmers University of Technology, he began working in the field of probability theory. He mainly made contributions to the Central Limit Theorem and to the theory of stable distribution functions .
