In 1949 he switched to a scientific career and received his doctorate in 1952 with a dissertation on "Fundamentals of model railway technology". In addition, the "model railroad professor" was a member of the Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda model railroad club from 1975, which he supported significantly. In addition to his internationally recognized work as a model railway designer, Kurz was head of the technical committee for 15 years from 1971, abbreviated TK, the Association of Model Railroaders and Railway Friends of Europe , abbreviated MOROP. During this time, under his leadership, numerous standards, recommendations and documentation were created under the heading of standards for European model railways , or NEM for short.
