Harald Wolff (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harald Wolff (born May 29, 1950 in Berlin ) is a German painter and graphic artist who lives in Berlin and Paris .

life and work

He completed his studies in Berlin as a master student of Martin Engelman at the Hochschule der Künste . During his studies, the search for an alternative job led him to France and Paris. Work stays in Italy, Israel, Denmark, Slovenia, China and Spain followed.

In the initially rather non-representational paintings and drawings, figurative elements can be seen between 1978 and 1981. It is noticeable: the gestural style, which usually conjures up organic forms as dynamic moments in the picture, is in intense tension to a fixed, flat composition of the picture ground. This "gestural abstraction", the cheerful, playful coexistence and juxtaposition of blurred figures, thrown color paths and harsh graphic elements is the entire unmistakable artistic discovery of Harald Wolff.

reception

“Wolff's panel paintings (including the drawings as well as graphic prints and works on paper) are primarily the basic planimetric prerequisite for creating spaces of illusion, which in turn only result in the possibility of experiencing movement in space. Because that's exactly what pulls us under our spell in all of this artist's pictures: the mastery with which Harald Wolff lets us experience movement and speed. It is a constant interplay of static picture elements, two-dimensional and / or space-accentuating architectural fragments, which always come together in order to stand up to very sparingly placed, reduced line structures: But ultimately they only increase their expressive perception. We are drawn into the spell of places of origin, of Genesis - rare scenes of destruction, of destruction; Only the creative process is meant, because in terms of content everything is possible at Wolff: As long as the human being is focused as a creature, his - the external forces - constant surrender is part of the topic. And I am inclined to suspect that it is precisely this struggle, this permanent rebellion, that has a decisive influence on the image drama: The human being at the center of a staccato of feelings!
