Hararghe (ሐረርጌ härge ) or Harerge ( Somali : Xararge ) was a province in the eastern part of Ethiopia . Their capital was Harar .

The province emerged after the city of Harar was conquered and incorporated into the Abyssinian Empire in 1887. In the following decades, the lowland areas to the east of the city, inhabited by Somali nomads , were also subjugated and incorporated into this province. This included especially Ogaden , the Somali region of the Clan of Ogadeni- Darod .

In 1960 the area south of the Shabelle River was separated from Hararghe as a separate province of Bale . In 1987, with the constitution of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia , the remaining Hararghe was divided into the sub-provinces of East and West Harerghe and the Autonomous Region of Dire Dawa , the southeastern part was incorporated into the Autonomous Region of Ogaden .

With the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia of 1995, the former Hararghe was divided between the new regions Oromia , Somali and Harar region .
