Haris Charalambous
Haris Charalambous (born November 3, 1984 in Manchester , † October 9, 2006 in Toledo , Ohio ) was a British basketball player of Cypriot origin.
Life
Charalambous began his career in 2001 with the British club Manchester Magic . He was the captain of the junior national team and was named England Under-18 player of the year in 2002 . In 2003 he moved to the USA and completed a preparatory year at the Hun School in Princeton . This was followed by a move to the University of Toledo in Ohio. His playing position was that of a center .
He died at the age of only 21 of the complications of a ruptured aortic arch of the heart that he suffered while exercising.
Commemoration
- Every year a tournament is held in England in his memory, the Haris Charalambous Memorial Tournament , in which European youth teams in the U-16 and U-18 age groups take part.
- The university established a Will Basketball Scholarship Fund in Charalambous.
