Harold Langmead Taylor Taswell

Harold Langmead Taylor Taswell (born February 14, 1910 , † 1992 ) was a South African diplomat .

Life

Harold Langmead Taylor Taswell was the son of Helen Gertrude Simkins and Stephen Langmead Taylor Taswell. He attended Christian Brothers' College, Mount Edmund in Pretoria and studied at the University of Cape Town .

In 1940 he was an attaché at the embassy in The Hague . From 1940 to 1946 he was Vice Consul in New York City , where he married Vera Blytt on July 13, 1940. From 1946 to 1949 he was consul in Elisabethville in the Belgian Congo . From 1951 to 1956 he was employed at the Embassy in Washington, DC . From 1956 to 1959 he was consul general in Luanda . From February 1, 1959 to May 31, 1961 he was High Commissioner (Commonwealth) in Rhodesia and Nyasaland . From February 9, 1965 to August 18, 1971 he was ambassador to Washington, DC On June 6, 1966, Robert F. Kennedy gave a speech at the University of Cape Town in front of the National Union of South African Students , an emancipatory student movement on Freedom of Research Day and of freedom rights . (Day of Affirmation Address). Kennedy consulted Harold Langmead Taylor Taswell in preparation for the speech, who presented him with his muzzle : He must not mention that the apartheid regime disapproved of the National Union of South African Students and that he would not be received by any South African government member.

From August 18, 1971 to 1978, he was permanent representative of the South African government at the United Nations Office in Geneva .
