Harold V. Biellier

Harold V. Biellier (born January 22, 1921 in Bois D'Arc , Missouri , † March 31, 2011 in Columbia , Missouri) was an American biologist. He was a professor at the University of Missouri and was a specialist in poultry ; his Super Chicken went into the book of records.

Life

Biellier grew up on a farm near Bois D'Arc , Missouri and studied at the University of Missouri . In 1943 he achieved a Bachelor of Science degree and then joined the army . With the rank of captain he finished his active service and followed a postgraduate course in poultry science at the University of Missouri; He also worked as a poultry farmer and trader. 1950 to 1953 he served again in the army; from 1953 he taught poultry science at the University of Missouri. In 1959 he received a professorship for it. As a member of the Poultry Science Association, he was a. a. temporarily director of the Missouri turkey research program . In 1986 he retired.

Records

The focus of his research was on optimizing poultry husbandry and production; in particular, he tried to improve the laying performance of hens. He influenced the animals' day-night rhythm, for example, through artificial lighting. In 1979 a test at the University of Missouri College of Agriculture set the record for the Leghorn hen with the number 2988. This chicken laid no fewer than 371 eggs during the 364 day test phase. In 1984, Biellier's Super Chicken entered the Guinness Book of Records for laying an egg for 448 consecutive days.
