Sir Harold Edward Walter (born April 17, 1920 in Quartier Militaire , Moka District ; † July 25, 1992 ) was a politician from Mauritius who was Foreign Minister between 1976 and 1982, among other things.

Life

In the elections of March 9, 1959, Walter ran for constituency No. 22 Mahebourg first successful for the then Legislative Council. In 1959 he became Minister for Public Works and Communications of the government of the British colony of Mauritius, whose chief minister had been Seewoosagur Ramgoolam since September 26, 1961 , and held this office until 1965. In the elections of October 21, 1963 he was elected in constituency No. 22 Mahebourg was re-elected a member of the Legislative Council and served as Minister of Health for the first time between 1965 and 1967.

As a candidate for the Independence Party in the elections of August 7, 1967 in constituency No. 12 Mahebourg and Plaine Magnien achieved the third-best result of the three seats to be allocated there and was thus elected a member of the current legislative assembly. In the subsequently formed government of Chief Minister Ramgoolam, he held the post of Labor Minister from 1967 to 1971 and then again as Minister of Health between 1971 and 1976. For his services, he was beaten on February 22, 1972 to the Knight Bachelor and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

In the elections of December 20, 1976, Walter applied for the Independence Party in constituency No. 12 Mahebourg and Plaine Magnien for one of three seats for sale but only finished sixth this time. However, he was awarded one of the eight additional seats in the legislative assembly as one of the so-called “best losers”, so that he was again a member of parliament. He was then reappointed to the government by Prime Minister Ramgoolam, who served as Foreign Minister and Minister of Tourism and Emigration until 1982. In the subsequent election on June 11, 1982, he decided not to run again and resigned from parliament after 23 years.
