Harris J. Ryan
Harris Joseph Ryan (born January 8, 1866 in Matamoras, Pike County (Pennsylvania) , † July 3, 1934 ) was an American high-voltage engineer.
From 1883 to 1887 he studied engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca with William Arnold Anthony . A visit to Frank Julian Sprague's factory piqued his interest in high-voltage transmission.
After spending a year at Western Engineering Company in Nebraska, he taught at Cornell. He introduced the cathode ray tube obtained from Germany in the USA as a research instrument. It was known there for a while as the Braun-Ryan tube .
In 1905 he moved to Stanford University , where he studied high-voltage phenomena. He developed an improved insulation measuring device and dealt with isolators.
In 1920 he was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences . In 1923/24 he was President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). In 1925 he received the Edison Medal .
