Henry Brown "Harry" Barkas (born January 21, 1906 in Wardley , † 1974 in South Shields ) was an English football player .

Career

Harry Barkas, the offspring of a footballing family that turned five of seven brothers into professional footballers, played for Spennymoor United in the North Eastern League in late 1929 when he scored four goals in a league game against the reserve team of South Shields FC . Barkas was then immediately committed by South Shields and made his debut in the Football League Third Division North on December 14 against Nelson FC when he scored both goals in a 2-1 win. Also in the episode, Barkas distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer and had scored 15 goals in 21 games by the end of the season. Because of the steadily decreasing number of spectators in South Shields over the years and the associated financial problems, the club moved to Gateshead, 15 kilometers away, in the summer of 1930 and renamed itself to AFC Gateshead .

Barkas went along with this and scored seven more goals for Gateshead in the months that followed before moving to Liverpool FC in the First Division in December 1930 for a transfer of £ 1,500 . Unlike his brothers Ned and Sam , the latter even made five caps for England, Harry was not granted a successful career in the First Division. His debut on January 3, 1931 against Middlesbrough FC was followed by only four more goalless appearances before he left the club again at the end of the 1931/32 season and continued his career in non-league football at Jarrow AFC .
