Harry Wesley Coover, Jr. (born March 6, 1917 in Newark , Delaware , † March 26, 2011 in Kingsport , Tennessee ) was an American chemist , inventor and, among other things, the discoverer of Eastman 910 , known as superglue .

Life

Coover earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Hobart College before earning a Masters of Science and Ph. D. from Cornell University . He worked for Eastman Kodak as a chemist from 1944 to 1973 and was the Vice President from 1973 to 1984. He spent his life in Kingsport , Tennessee .

In 1942, while searching for a material for observation prisms , Coover worked with cyanoacrylates for the first time , but their stickiness made them unsuitable for this purpose. Nine years later, this material came back into focus when Kodak was asked to develop heat-resistant cockpit hoods. Again, the stickiness of the substance led to this path not being pursued any further. However, Coover now recognized the possibilities of using the fabric as an adhesive. In 1958 Super Glue came on the market.

Initially, the focus was on the bonding of solid materials, but Coover was the first to recognize the possibilities of cyanoacrylate for bonding living tissue and applied for a patent for it. Initially used in the Vietnam War, this technique has over time been used worldwide.

Coover applied for 460 patents. He himself considered programmed innovation, a management method for research and development, to be his most important work. The Kodak launch resulted in the discovery of 320 new products and an increase in sales revenue from $ 1.8 billion to $ 2.5 billion. Coover later marketed this technology worldwide.

Coover received the Southern Chemist Man of the Year Award for outstanding service in personal creativity. He also received the Earle B. Barnes Award for Leadership in Chemical Research Management , the Maurice Holland Award, and the Industrial Research Institute Medal of Honor . In 2004, Coover was inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame . In 2010 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation .
