Harry H. Corbett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry H. Corbett OBE (born February 28, 1925 in Rangoon , † March 21, 1982 in Hastings ) was a British actor .

Corbett was best known in Great Britain for his supporting role in the popular sitcom Steptoe and Son , which was produced by the BBC between 1962 and 1965 and again between 1970 and 1974 and which also resulted in two movies. In this tragicomic series he played the lead role of the scrap collector Harold Steptoe , who lives with his peculiar, widowed father (played by Wilfrid Brambell ) and can rarely achieve his dreams. In 1963 he won a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor . The enormous popularity of the series was, however, also a curse for Corbett's acting career, since the renowned stage actor - sometimes celebrated as the "British Marlon Brando " - was subsequently offered almost exclusively roles in the style of Harold Steptoe .

His acting work includes more than 70 film and television productions. The actor was married twice and had two children. In 1976 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire . Corbett died of a heart attack in March 1982 at the age of 57 .
