Harry Holmes

Harry William Holmes (* 1896 in London ; † November 8, 1986 ibid) was a board member and honorary president of the World Esperanto Federation ( Universala Esperanto-Asocio , UEA).

He was employed by the British Ministry of Defense by profession . His rank corresponded to that of a brigadier general . In 1955 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

Together with his wife Nora Holmes (* 1902 , † 14 May 1993 ) he was one of the most active members of the London Esperanto Club, from 1933 to 1952 he was its chairman.

In 1956 he was elected Vice-President of the World Esperanto Federation, which he held until 1964. President Giorgio Canuto died in 1960, Hideo Yagi was elected as his successor only in 1962 , during this interim Holmes was acting President of the UEA. After Yagi's death in 1964, he was briefly acting president again and then became honorary president; he resigned this office in 1974.

Holmes was a Freemason .
