Harry Kümel (born January 27, 1940 in Antwerp , Belgium ) is a Belgian film director .

Life

His vampire film Blood on the Lips (Les lèvres rouges, 1971) with Delphine Seyrig became a cult hit in Europe and the United States. In the same year Malpertuis followed with Orson Welles and Mathieu Carrière in the leading roles. Based on the novel of the same name by Belgian writer Jean Ray , Malpertuis was not a huge box office success, despite the fact that the film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival .

Another well-known work by Kümels is the drama Monsieur Hawarden, shot in 1968 . In it, Meriora Gillibrand, a lady from a good family, has to make her way through Europe disguised as a man after killing her lover. Under the name Hawarden, she and her servant flee to Belgium. The film was partly based on a true story; Gillibrand's grave can still be visited today in the German-speaking part of Belgium.

In 2014 he received the Belgian Mira d'Or Lifetime Achievement Film Award .
