Harry Kleffel

Harry Kleffel (born May 1, 1929 in Suhl ) is a former officer of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of major general .

Military career

After eight years of attending school, Kleffel completed an apprenticeship in the savings bank in his hometown from 1943 and was employed there until 1948. In 1945 he joined the KPD and in 1946 switched to the SED . On October 25, 1948, Kleffel joined the German armed forces in the Soviet zone of occupation and was finance director from 1949 to 1952 and deputy for material and technical supplies at the People's Police School in Glöwen until 1954 . From 1954 to 1955 Kleffel was an officer auditor at the University of Erfurt , which was followed by a stay at a military academy in the Soviet Union . After his return he was from 1959 to 1960 head of organization and planning of the 4th motorized rifle division and then deputy commander of the rear services of this division. In 1962 Kleffel rose to the position of Chief of Staff, Reverse Services, in command of Military District III, and then from 1966 to 1968 to attend a General Staff Academy in the Soviet Union.

After his return in 1968, Kleffel was Deputy Chief of Military District and Head of Rear Services in Military District V until 1973 . On October 2, 1970, he was promoted to major general in this position. 1973 Kleffel rose to the position of deputy chief of the land forces of the NVA and chief of the rear services in command of the land forces. From 1978 until his release on October 31, 1989, he was commander of the rear services section at the NVA military academy in Dresden .

Kleffel is the bearer of the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver, of the Kampford “For Merit to People and Fatherland” in gold, as well as various other orders and decorations . He was also awarded a Dr. rer. mil. PhD.
