Harry Maier

Harry Maier (born April 24, 1934 in Feodossija ; † December 26, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German economist .

Life

Harry Maier studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1961 he received his doctorate there with the thesis "Critique of the political-economic defense of the rule of monopoly capital by the Catholic social doctrine in West Germany". In 1967 he completed his habilitation at the Berlin School of Economics on the subject of "Measuring workload as a political and economic problem" (together with Karl Bichtler). In 1968 he was appointed professor of political economy . Maier was deputy director of the Central Institute for Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR from the 1970s and later until 1986 deputy director of the Institute for Theory, Organization and History of Science of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.

In 1986 he did not return to the GDR from a trip to Austria . He became dean of the economics faculty of the newly founded Nordic University of Flensburg . After its dissolution in 1989 until retirement in 1999, he was professor of economics at the Flensburg University of Education .

Maier's main field of work was the economics of education . After the fall of the Wall , he came out with publications on the transformation of the GDR economy due to his knowledge of the economic systems in East and West. Maier set up the first German-Danish course for corporate education and management in Flensburg and is therefore considered the father of the International Institute for Management and Economic Education at the European University of Flensburg .
