Hartmann II. Von Kirchberg (* around 1466; † April 1, 1529 in Mainz ) was prince abbot of the Fulda monastery from 1513 to 1521/29 .

origin

Hartmann came from the family of the burgraves of Kirchberg . His parents were Albrecht IV († 1455), Burgrave of Kirchberg in Kranichfeld , and Katharina von Greus.

Life

Hartmann II. Von Kirchberg was Rector Magnificus of the University of Erfurt in 1484 , became canon in Mainz in 1487 and obtained his doctorate in 1490 as Legum Doctor ( Doctor of Laws ). His in-depth knowledge of the law drew the papal envoy in Germany, Cardinal Raimund Peraudi , to the attention of him, who consulted him on important matters. It was also Raimund who advised Emperor Maximilian I to send Hartmann to Poland and to settle an important dispute.

In 1513 Hartmann was elected abbot of Fulda and at the same time abbot of the imperial abbey of Hersfeld . His attention was more focused on the events in the empire, while he neglected the monasteries entrusted to him. What his predecessors had acquired through frugality for the church and monastery, he wasted. The beginning Reformation , which was supposed to be faced by a spiritual leader and imperial prince with strong faith, was well received by the monks and nuns who joined it. The abbot, more concerned with serving the world than serving God, showed late repentance; In 1521 he chose Johann III. von Henneberg-Schleusingen to his coadjutor and went to Mainz, where he lived quietly and withdrawn and died in 1529. His body was buried there.
