Johann II von Henneberg-Schleusingen (* July 2, 1439 , † May 20, 1513 in Fulda ) was prince abbot of the Fulda monastery from 1472 to 1513 .

origin

Johann came from the line of the Counts of Henneberg-Schleusingen founded by Count Berthold V. von Henneberg in 1274 .

His father was Wilhelm II von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1415–1444); he died on January 8, 1444 as a result of a hunting accident.

His mother was Katharina von Hanau (1408–1460), daughter of Count Reinhard von Hanau and Katharina von Nassau-Beilstein .

They had six children, the eldest Wilhelm III. von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1434–1480) married Duchess Margarethe von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1451–1509) in 1469 . Wilhelm died in Salurn in 1480 while on the way back from his pilgrimage to Rome. His sister Margarete von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1437–1482) was a Benedictine in the Stadtilm monastery . The two younger siblings Margareta von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1437–1444) and Berthold von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1441–1446) died in childhood. Berthold XIV. Von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1443–1495) was provost of St. Stephan in Bamberg and Margarethe von Henneberg-Schleusingen (1444–1485) married Count Günther XX. (XXXVI.) Von Schwarzburg-Arnstadt (1439–1503).

Life

Count Johann II von Henneberg-Schleusingen, from 1465 to 1473 also Lord of Osterburg; Together with his brother Berthold he received the tonsure (Low Consecrations) on October 14, 1452 at Mainberg Castle from Würzburg Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Hutter, OFM . He becomes pastor of Schmalkalden and a little later leaves the parish to the priest Johann Ernis in return for an annual pension of 45  florins. On July 26, 1453, he receives prospectuses on canonicals in Mainz and Würzburg from Pope Nicholas V. Canon in Strasbourg at the age of 22 . On April 6, 1454 he became canon in Cologne , in the winter semester 1454/55 he matriculated, together with his brother Berthold, at the University of Erfurt . To him by his brother Wilhelm III. On June 3, 1457 he gave up the Schmalkalden canonical a few days later. As early as 1456 he became canon in Mainz , was canon in Bamberg and in 1458 cathedral provost in Eichstätt , in 1461 canon in Trier and in 1462 canon and canon in Würzburg . In 1467 he hurried to the abbot of Fulda Reinhard von Weilnau to help his territory from Heinrich III. , Landgrave of Hesse was attacked. He managed to beat him and drive him away again. In gratitude, the Henneberger received the counties of Ziegenhain and Nidda as a fief. In 1469 he became field captain of the abbot of Fulda, who appointed him coadjutor in 1470 .

In 1472 the chapter of the imperial abbey elected the coadjutor Johann II. Count von Henneberg-Schleusingen as prince abbot of Fulda. The prudent and splendid abbot was able to redeem pledged properties despite an oppressive lack of money. In 1492 he founded the Order of St. Simplicius .

In 1507 Prince Abbot Johannes II von Henneberg-Schleusingen appointed Hartmann II Burgrave von Kirchberg as his coadjutor. He died on 20th / 26th May 1513 and was buried in Fulda Cathedral.

The heraldic shield, quartered with a heart shield, shows in fields 1 and 4 a growing black double-headed eagle above, divided in gold, a (red count) crown and below red / silver in two rows; in fields 2 and 3 in gold on a green three-mountain a black hen with a red comb and red wattles, in field 3 turned (prince counts of Henneberg-Schleusingen). The heart shield in silver / white a black continuous cross (Fürstabtei Fulda).
