Hartmut Fehrmann (born June 3, 1933 in Berlin ; † January 27, 2020 in Göttingen ) was an agricultural scientist and phytomedicist, particularly in mycology, as well as a professor at the University of Göttingen .

Live and act

After finishing secondary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a gardener and worked as a gardener's assistant on the Prussendorf teaching and experimental farm near Zörbig (Saxony-Anhalt). This was followed by a period of study which, in addition to Berlin, also took him to Bonn and Göttingen, where he studied botany, chemistry, geosciences and agriculture between 1952 and 1959. After the agricultural diploma at the University of Bonn , the doctorate at the Institute for Plant Diseases in Bonn followed in 1962 with the dissertation on the pathogenesis of Phytophthora infestans , as well as a research stay in New Haven USA. After his return he moved to the Institute for Phytopathology at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Gießen, which also appointed him professor after his habilitation. At the beginning of 1973 the call to the University of Göttingen followed the newly established professorship for mycology under Professor Rudolf Heitefuß .

Special activities

The focus of Fehrmann's work was on the epidemiology and control of cereal diseases, especially in wheat and barley . His focus was on aspects such as the use of mixtures of varieties in wheat against powdery mildew, rust and Septoria nodorum, the analysis of virulence spectra in brown rust, Septoria tritici and Drechslera teres and, above all, on changes in fungicide sensitivity in the field of strawberries. For many years, investigations into the eye hernia took up a large part of the mycological department. The focus here was on monitoring fungicide sensitivity, interactions between the different pathotypes of Pseudocercosporella (today Oculimacula sp.), As well as the possibility of biological control.

A very modern approach at the time consisted in the development of a PC-based warning service for combating strawberries. Further doctoral projects were devoted to ecological issues such as the role of the epiphytic fungal flora on cereal leaves for plant health or the cause and dynamics of suppressivity in arable soils.

The mycological department of the University of Göttingen experienced a strong demand for diploma and doctoral theses, especially from the mid-1970s. In the latter case, Hartmut Fehrmann was responsible for a total of 58 doctoral students as doctoral supervisor.
