Hartmut Günther (theologian)

Hartmut Oskar Günther (* December 20, 1931 ; † November 21, 2008 in Groß Oesingen ) was a German Lutheran theologian , author and university professor.

Life

Hartmut Günther worked as a teacher at the proseminar from 1960 and then from 1963 to 1996 as a professor of biblical theology at the Lutheran Theological University in Oberursel . On May 24, 1963 he did his doctorate at the University of Erlangen with Wilhelm Maurer (1900–1982) in church history with a thesis on the development of Melanchthon's doctrine of will in the discussion of Luther and Erasmus .

He then headed the jury commission for the Hermann Sasse Prize for years . From 1977 to 1999 Hartmut Günther was editor and collaborator of the magazine Lutherische Theologie und Kirche (LuThK). Until immediately before his death, Hartmut Günther was involved in the community of the independent Evangelical Lutheran Church in Groß Oesingen through divine service and pastoral care .

Honors

On November 10, 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Concordia Seminary St. Louis of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS).
