Hartmut Hornung (born October 14, 1952 in Zehdenick ) is a German sculptor , painter and graphic artist .

life and work

After graduating from high school, Hornung served in the National People's Army from 1971 to 1973 . Afterwards, an already promised place to study geology was withdrawn from him, and he was also denied regular studies at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art because, as a soldier on the border with the Federal Republic of Germany, he had refused to accept the shooting order. After his service, Hornung temporarily worked as a transport worker. From 1974 to 1978 he studied art education / German at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Gerenot Richter and the head of the graphic workshop Johannes Prusko were his teachers there. He also took painting courses with Bruno Bernitz at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . 1978–1979 Hornung worked as a drawing teacher in Berlin. Against fierce opposition he gave up this work and started his own business as a painter. With great effort, he and his friend Michael Diller set up a graphic workshop for etchings and lithographs in Berlin. In 1984 he created a second place to live and work in Ludwigshof near Ueckermünde. There he began in 1985 besides painting and graphics with wood carving.

Hornung first became known for his expressive cycle of drypoint etchings on the ship disaster of the " Andrea Doria ", which was shown in 1985 in the exhibition "100 selected graphics from the GDR". In 1991 Hornung gave up his Berlin studio and moved entirely to Ludwigshof. From 1992 to 1998 he had a teaching position in the master class of Alfred Hrdlicka , whose work stimulated and shaped his artistic work at an early stage, at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . From 2000 to 2002 he was Professor and Head of the Institute for Elementary Forms in the Department of Architecture at the University of Braunschweig and from 2003 Professor in the Department of Architecture at the West Saxon University in Zwickau.

reception

"Hartmut Hornung's work is characterized by the expressive gesture in the art of the GDR of the eighties, an expression of the end-time mood of that time, an expression of constant irritation due to the annoying inadequacies in both material and, above all, intellectual life ...

What remains from the experiences of his youth are his skepticism, his rigorism, but also his vitality. His sculptural work is also influenced by this. Unlike sculptures made of plaster, they are not conceived from the core, but cut out with a chainsaw, but also refined with a chisel. "
