Hartvikvatnet ( Hartvik Lake , North Sami : Árajávri ) is a lake surrounded by high mountains in the Norwegian municipality of Narvik , about 15 km away , about 4 km east of the village of Bjerkvik . The lake has a length of 2 km and a maximum width of 1.5 km. It is crossed by the Elvegårdselva River. The Elvegårdsmoen military camp is located on the western bank . Nearby is the Vassdalen (Vastal) valley , where an avalanche accident ( Vassdal accident ) occurred on March 5, 1986 during a NATO exercise .

Sunken Ju 52

During the Battle of Narvik in World War II, the German troops of General Eduard Dietl were trapped and supplies were intercepted by sea. On April 13, 1940, eleven Ju 52s landed on the frozen Hartvikvatnet for air supplies , ten of which had to be left behind. Efforts by Norwegians to recover them destroyed British hurricanes on May 24th, after which the machines sank as the snowmelt began.

After Norwegian enthusiasts recovered a Ju 52 from a depth of around 50 m in 1983, Günter Leonhardt and Colonel Walter Holinka (1934–2007) founded the Ju 52 interest group, which in the summer of 1986 hid four more machines from around 75 m depth. Two of the restored Ju 52s are in the Ju-52 Museum in Wunstorf and the Hugo Junkers Technology Museum in Dessau, and a part of the fuselage in the Aviation Museum Laatzen-Hanover .
