Elvegårdsmoen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elvegårdsmoen is a military training area and a supply base for the Norwegian armed forces about 15 km north of Narvik in the Norwegian province of Nordland . It is located at the northeast end of the Herjangsfjord , a northern tributary of the Ofotfjord , southeast of the village of Bjerkvik and on the south side of the small river Elvegårdselva . To the west of Elvegårdsmoen, on the banks of the fjord, the E 6 and E 10 European roads, which are identical for a few kilometers, run .

Second World War

Elvegårdsmoen was of some importance in 1940 during the Battle of Narvik and the German occupation of Norway ( Operation Weser Exercise ). First it was captured on April 9th by German mountain troops of the 3rd Mountain Division under Major General Eduard Dietl , who had been landed at the end of the Herjangsfjord by the destroyers Wolfgang Zenker , Erich Koellner and Hermann Künne . During the fighting that followed, it was recaptured on May 13 by troops of the French Foreign Legion . But since the German Reich had already opened the western offensive against France on May 10th, the Allied troops fighting in Northern Norway were withdrawn from May 24th to strengthen the front in France. The German Wehrmacht was therefore able to reoccupy Narvik and Elvegårdsmoen in June. The facilities were partially destroyed by aerial bombs during the fighting , but then used and expanded by the German occupiers.

Todays use

Since 2005 Elvegårdsmoen has been the headquarters of Home Guard District 16 North Hålogaland .
