history

Numerous international media art exhibitions and events have taken place since the association was founded. For example, in 1998 the exhibition “Reserves of Longing” in the former Union brewery in the city center of Dortmund. This gave rise to the idea of converting the former brewery cooling tower into the Dortmund U - Center for Art and Creativity, which was opened in May 2010 as part of the RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture . Since then, the Dortmunder U has been the main venue for the HMKV's program of exhibitions and events in Dortmund.

2000 to 2009

After an exhibition project in Dortmund's public space (“Plan B - Art Space City”), Hartware curated projects in Rotterdam, Duisburg, Amsterdam and Copenhagen in 2000 and 2001. From 2001 to 2002 various exhibitions took place in the 400 m² exhibition space on Güntherstrasse in Dortmund. B. “Control fields” (2002). In 2004 the exhibition "games" (2003), sponsored by the Kunststiftung NRW and the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, was awarded the innovation prize of the Socioculture Fund. The German section of the international art critic association AICA described "games" as a "special exhibition of the year 2003" in addition to the exhibition Art in the GDR in the New National Gallery in Berlin.

From 2003 to 2010 many exhibitions were shown in the 2,200 m² Phoenix Hall built in 1895 , including a. 2004 the “Nam June Paik Award” of the Kunststiftung NRW (2004), “vom Verschorben” (2005), “reckon with everything” (2006, together with the Museum am Ostwall), “The Wonderful World of irational.org” (2006 ), “History Will Repeat Itself” (2007), “Anna Kournikova… Art in the Age of Intellectual Property” (2008) and “Only the ghosts are awake” (2009).

2010 to 2012

Since May 2010 the exhibitions of the Hartware Medienkunstverein have been on view on the third floor of the Dortmunder U, the former fermentation and storage tower of the Dortmund Union brewery. In alternation with other institutions, the changing exhibition area on the sixth floor is also used for large-scale exhibition projects.

With “Agents & Provocateurs” the HMKV opened the first exhibition in the new Dortmund U in mid-May - two weeks before the official opening. Other exhibitions in the Dortmunder U were “Building Memory” and “inter-cool 3.0”. The exhibition "Arctic Perspective" in the Phoenixhalle, funded by the European Commission, was named one of the "Best Exhibitions 2010" by the American art magazine Artforum . At the same time, Arctic Perspective was the (for the time being) last event of the HMKV in the Phoenixhalle.

As part of ISEA2010 RUHR, the exhibition "Electronic Atmospheres" took place in the Museum for Art and Cultural History Dortmund and other locations in the city. Internationally, in 2010 the HMKV presented the exhibitions “Only the Spirits are Awake” (Poland) and “Building Memory” in Łodz (Poland) and Tel Aviv (Israel).

The HMKV also organized four international conferences: the ISEA2010 RUHR, the “16th International Symposium on Electronic Art” in Essen, Dortmund and Duisburg, the “E-Culture Fair” in the Dortmunder U, “Satellite / Border / Footprint” as part of “ GrenzGebiete Ruhr ”and the“ Arctic Perspective Open Space Conference ”in the Phoenixhalle Dortmund. In 2011, the HMKV received the annual sponsorship award for art associations of the Kunststiftung NRW for its achievements in the production, presentation and communication of contemporary (media) art.

With “Barbara Breitenfellner: Dream of an Exhibition”, a solo presentation by a young artist was shown on the third floor of the Dortmunder U for the first time.

The “Gone to Croatan” project, in cooperation with the Center of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu” from Toruń (Poland), continued the tradition of large international group exhibitions and provided the first display of the temporary exhibition area of the Dortmunder U (6th floor) by the HMKV The “Japan Media Arts Festival” and the “Proto Anime Cut” show from July to October were a thematic focus within the HMKV 2011 program. In November 2011, the HMKV, in cooperation with the Kulturstiftung des Bundes and Suhrkamp-Verlag, presented fifteen contemporary artistic positions as part of the international group exhibition "The Oil Show", which dealt with the geopolitical, social and ecological consequences of dependence on oil. The exhibition was accompanied by a supporting program with film screenings, workshops, artist talks and a multimedia discussion event.

The HMKV program in 2012 initially includes three solo exhibitions by the British artist Suzanne Treister ("HEXEN 2.0"), the German artist Francis Hunger ("History has left the building") and the Polish artist Artur Zmijewski ("Democracies"). ). In August the international group exhibition “Sounds like Silence” opened on two floors. On the occasion of the 100th birthday of John Cage and the 60th anniversary of the world premiere of his famous "silent piece", the exhibition was dedicated to Cage's work as a starting point and showed 40 contemporary and current artistic and musical references to 4'33 ″ and those that deal with more general questions of sound ecology. There was an event program in the context of the exhibition. In addition, the publication of the same name "Sounds Like Silence" was published, which contains theoretical essays and artistic works that relate to the work of John Cage. The book also includes scores and variations by the composer, versions, derivatives and updates of the “silent piece” from 1962 to 1992.

2013 to 2015

The year 2013 began the HMKV with the solo exhibition Eran Schaerf's “fm-scenario”, in order to then dedicate itself to the performativity of voice and language in the international show “His Master’s Voice” curated by Inke Arns.

From September 2013 to March 2014 the "New Industries Festival" initiated by the HMKV took place in the Dortmunder U. It dealt with the past and the future of industry. In this context, HMKV organized the exhibitions “Requiem for a Bank” and “INDUSTRIAL (Research)”. In Sunday matinées, guests were invited to put on records with commentary, to artist talks, lectures and film screenings on the subject of industrial. The HMKV festival program concluded in January with a film program curated by Florian Wüst and the interdisciplinary New Industries conference entitled “Money and Debt in the Post-Industrial World”.

In 2014, a new format found its way into the HMKV program: parallel to the temporary exhibitions, current video works by international artists have been presented on a monthly basis in the “Video of the Month” series since March 2014.

With "World of Matter" an international research, exhibition and web project was hosted by HMKV, which deals with the global interrelationships of raw materials and their complex ecologies and, following the exhibition in the Dortmund U, to partner institutions in New York, Montreal , Minneapolis and Stockholm wandered on.

Two HMKV exhibitions are dedicated to current and historical phenomena of net culture: “Now I help myself” brought together the best video tutorials from the net in the exhibition room on 100 monitors and projections. From July 2015 the follow-up project "Digital Folklore" was on view.

"Bad Clowns" brought together international positions from contemporary art and pop culture on the uncanny facets of clowns. With the participation of Dortmund citizens, the video work “The Village's Biggest Loser” by Abner Preis was created in the exhibition rooms of the HMKV, and a new work by the net artist Constant Dullaart was commissioned in coproduction with the media art center Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris.

With the exhibition "The Mechanical Corps", a takeover from Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin) , the HMKV set out in spring 2015 on the trail of Jules Verne and the steampunk aesthetic.
