Urbane Künste Ruhr is a cultural institution founded in 2012 that succeeds the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 and realizes artistic productions in the urban space of the Ruhr area . In addition to the Ruhrtriennale , Chorwerk Ruhr and the Tanzlandschaft Ruhr or PACT Zollverein, it forms one of the four program pillars of Kultur Ruhr GmbH . The curator and cultural scientist Britta Peters has been the artistic director of Urbane Künste Ruhr since 2018. From 2012 to 2017, the management was with the art historian and curator Katja Aßmann .

history

Urbane Künste Ruhr was founded by the shareholders of Kultur Ruhr GmbH, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Ruhr Regional Association . The cultural institution was commissioned to produce internationally relevant art projects in urban space. The origins of the programmatic orientation of these productions go back to two major projects: the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Emscher Park and the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 .

Although the self-image of Urbane Künste Ruhr is in the tradition of the two structural projects, it stands out from them. With the declared goal of creating the combination of urban landscape and urban society, Urbane Künste Ruhr would like to take up what began with the establishment of industrial culture and landmark art in the 1990s by the IBA and its successor in setting the metaphor of the metropolis within the framework of the Ruhr .2010 found: "The connection between art and life", writes Katja Aßmann, "is not perceived as an experimental arrangement, but has already become a reality in everyday urban life in the Ruhr area." According to its own statements, urban arts Ruhr is making efforts that have continued since then Decline in the coal and steel industry Continuing (post-industrial) history of the transformation of the Ruhr area as a possibility of noticeable change in the city This structural change should be accompanied accordingly with productions, in the framework of which diverse elements of different art genres can be combined as urban arts: “Urban arts”, says Assmann, “are the place where the different disciplines meet. And not only the visual and performing arts, but also the planning. ”Understood as an elementary part of urban development, they are a means of opening up new perspectives on the future of the region and with regard to the reflection of that change in them. so the claim to continue a relevant development. Due to the international presence of similar artistic interventions in urban development processes, Urbane Künste Ruhr sees itself as a platform for international dialogue with the Ruhr area as a local field of experimentation.

The Urbane Künste Ruhr program is marked by different project phases and formats, which were regularly accompanied by discursive elements. Initially limited to three years, the first cycle consisted of three phases, each stretching over a year and documented by program brochures (brochures, leaflets, invitation cards, etc.) published at the time. In the first phase, so-called laboratories were set up in 2012: artists researched a. a. with citizens as representatives of urban associations and “experts” on everyday urban life, topics that were considered relevant in the context of art and urban planning. In public discussion rounds, possible program items of an agenda were jointly designed, which it was assumed could be a basis for getting involved artistically in urban life in the region. Although the second year offered events in which the risks of one's own approach were highlighted, projects emerged that gave the Regionalverband Ruhr an opportunity to express public criticism. According to media reports, the shareholder's cultural politicians criticized the implementation of guidelines with regard to the involvement of local artists and cultural institutions, which they saw too negligently. A correspondingly designed program was then implemented in the third phase in 2014.

The second cycle, again limited to three years, began in 2015 and ended in 2017. If, according to the company's own statements, the programmatic focus in previous years was still set on individual topics relevant to the region, the thematic focus of mobility has been negotiated since 2015 and attempts have been made to encourage the residents of the region to participate in the project. Such a commitment on the part of the city associations included the active involvement of the residents in project-specific contexts. Encouraging them to contribute to the design of their cities and to get involved in urban design developments outside the scope of the project was the declared concern that the cultural organization emphatically pursued.

Since January 2018, under the direction of Britta Peters, previously among other things curator of the Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017, one of the organization's concerns has been to bundle the content of the program. The focus is now more than in previous years on the implementation of a dedicated art program and is less concerned with urban development contexts in an applied form. The new program includes the organization of a major annual exhibition project, the Ruhr thing , with a changing focus.

Projects

Urbane Künste Ruhr is further developing certain larger projects that arose as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 with an explicit focus on the urban space of the Ruhr area.

Under the direction of Katja Aßmann, Urbane Künste Ruhr developed, among other things, the B1 | A40 project developed during the Capital of Culture into a long-term research project that examined the urban space of the federal motorway 40 (A40) and presented the results to the public in various formats.

In addition, the promotion and communication of light art, which is prominently represented in the Ruhr area via the Center for International Light Art in Unna, is part of the task area of Urbane Künste Ruhr.

The central program content since 2019 has been the Ruhr Ding exhibition project, which takes place annually in May and June. In this context, up to 20 projects are being implemented at different locations in the Ruhr area. The first edition Ruhr Ding: Territorien from May 4th to June 30th focused on the cities and connecting routes between Dortmund, Bochum, Essen and Oberhausen, the second edition Ruhr Ding: Klima, which will take place from May 9th to June 28th, 2020 is to the north of the region, including Herne, Recklinghausen, Marl and Haltern am See. In addition, Urbane Künste Ruhr organizes a residency program for artists and the event series Wandersalon.

Under the title Visiting Urbane Künste Ruhr , ten international artists have the opportunity to spend three and twelve months in the Ruhr area and work independently of the project. All candidates are determined via a proposal process that takes the thematic bracket for the respective Ruhr thing as a starting point. For the 2019/2020 vintage, the focus is on artists who deal with the topic of “climate” in the broadest sense. The Wandersalon series of events also prepares people for the Ruhr thing . At irregular intervals, Urbane Künste Ruhr invites artists, scientists and other experts to incorporate their artistic work, ideas and critical considerations into a public discussion.

Urbane Künste Ruhr has been developing an artistic contribution to each season of the Ruhrtriennale since 2012.

The exhibition format Emscherkunst will be transferred to the permanent sculpture path Emscherkunst Weg. The Emscherkunst took place for the first time in 2010 on the occasion of the Ruhr Capital of Culture. 2010 and was continued in 2013 and 2016 by Urbane Künste Ruhr, the Emschergenossenschaft and the Regionalverband Ruhr. New permanent works along the course of the Emscher, which form the Emscherkunst Weg, will be successively added to the existing works from previous Emscherkunst editions. The project refers to the near-natural conversion of the Emscher system . It examines the social and cultural effects of this 85-kilometer-long transformation of the river from an open sewer back into a natural river environment, encompassing several municipal areas of responsibility.

Network approach

The explicit mandate and goal of Urbane Künste Ruhr is to strengthen the existing art networks in the Ruhr area, to provide organizational support and to encourage the establishment of new alliances.

Another network managed by Urbane Künste Ruhr is the Strong Places , an association of artists' associations of the Ruhr area initiated as part of RUHR.2010.
