Hartwig von Hersfeld (* before 1028; † December 1090 in Hersfeld ) was abbot of the Hersfeld monastery from 1072 to 1090 and in 1085 he was anti-archbishop of Magdeburg for a few months .

Life

Hartwig was born before 1028. He came from a well-to-do family, perhaps based in Hesse or Franconia . Presumably he was educated in Bamberg , where he became head of the local school in 1054. On March 15, 1058 he was consecrated as a monk in Hersfeld, where the then abbot Meginher (1035-1059) had built a school. On September 16, 1058, he was ordained a presbyter in Aschaffenburg and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land from there , albeit without the consent of his abbot.

After he died and his successor Ruthardt had resigned from office for health reasons, Hartwig was appointed abbot in Hersfeld by King Heinrich IV in 1072 . As abbot he took part in a synod in Erfurt in March 1073 and supported Heinrich there. When Heinrich, following the resolutions of the Mainz church assembly, came to Saxony with an army on July 1, 1085, Hartwig was patronized as Archbishop of Magdeburg on July 13 and was elected by the clergy and people. This also were Sigewin Cologne and other bishops as Thiedo of Brandenburg.

Although Hartwig tried to sow disagreement among the Saxons, the rival king Hermann von Salm got back to his possessions after two months after Heinrich's army had withdrawn. Hartwig was thus forced to return to Hersfeld. According to the Goseck Chronicle, Abbot Friedrich von Goseck, who became his successor, received news of his death on Christmas Day 1090.
