Harvey Mansfield
Harvey Claflin Mansfield, Jr. (born March 21, 1932 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American political theorist .
Life
Mansfield was born in 1932 to Columbia Professor Harvey C. Mansfield, Sr. He studied at Harvard University from 1949 to 1962 . In between (from 1954 to 1956) he was a soldier in the US Army . After the Ph.D. he was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1962 he returned to Harvard, where he became Frank G. Thomson Professor of Government in 1988 and William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Government in 1993 . He is also a Carol G. Simon Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University . He was previously a council member of the American Political Science Association and president of the New England Historical Association . From 1973 to 1977 he was Chairman of the Government Department at Harvard University. Mansfield wrote studies on Aristotle , Edmund Burke , Thomas Hobbes , Niccolò Machiavelli and Alexis de Tocqueville ; he also translated works by Machiavelli and Tocqueville into English. The political philosophy of Leo Strauss exerted a great influence on him . His academic students include: a. Andrew Sullivan , Alan Keyes , Mark Lilla and Francis Fukuyama . Mansfield is married with three children.
