Hasan bay Agajew ( Azerbaijani Həsən bəy Məşədi Hüseyn oğlu Ağayev ; * 1875 in Elisavetpol (now Gəncə ), Elisavetpol Governorate, Russian Empire ; † July 19, 1920 in Tbilisi , Democratic Republic of Georgia ) was an Azerbaijani deputy politician, parliamentary doctor, journalist of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic between 1918 and 1920.

biography

After graduating from high school, Agayev was enrolled in the medical faculty of Lomonosov University in Moscow with financial support from the Azerbaijani philanthropist Hadschi Zeynalabdin Taghiyev , which he successfully completed in 1910. In addition to his medical practice, he was also active in the journalistic field. He wrote articles for Azerbaijani-language newspapers such as “İrşad” (Irschad), “Tərəqqi” (Täräqqi) and “Həqiqət” (Häqiqät, editor was Üzeyir Hacıbəyov ). The main focus of his contributions was, among other things, the elimination of social causes of disease. He was also involved in the social and cultural life of Baku .

After the Russian Revolution in 1905, Agayev expanded his academic and political activities. At the second teachers' congress in 1907 he was elected deputy to Ali bay Husejnzade , the famous Azerbaijani scholar and philosopher. Between 1911 and 1912 he published the newspaper "Cənubi Qafqaz" (South Caucasus) in Elisawetpol. There he was also chairman of the Muslim Education Committee during the same period.

After the collapse of the Russian Empire, Agayev was one of the founders of the Central Committee of the Turkish Federalists in March 1917. Only three months later he was accepted into the central committee of the future ruling Musawat party . In the same year he was elected to the Russian Constituent Assembly by the Transcaucasian constituency . However, when the Bolsheviks came to power in October 1917, this Constituent Assembly could not meet. Agayev then moved to Tbilisi and represented the Muslim faction in the Transcaucasian Sejm, which had been formed in February 1918.

Agayev is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan (DRA) on May 28, 1918. From September to December 1918 he was chief physician at the state railway company Azərbaycan Dəmir Yolları before he was appointed deputy chairman of the DRA parliament. Because Alimardan bay Topchubashov was on the diplomatic mission in Paris in 1919 (as part of the Paris Peace Conference ), Agayev held the position of speaker of parliament until February 1920. With the establishment of Soviet rule in Azerbaijan, Agayev went to Tbilisi, where he was murdered on July 19, 1920 by an Armenian terrorist (member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation ). He was buried in the Muslim cemetery of Tbilisi (today's pantheon of the famous Azerbaijanis in the Botanical Garden) next to the tomb of Fətəli Xan Xoyski and that of the Azerbaijani playwright Mirzə Fətəli Axundov .
