Geography and landscape

In the valley of the hazel

The valley of the hazel is a close Wiesengrund, begins at the hazel source on Bornküppel (390 m); Approx. 4 km gently sloping to the west, lined with mixed forests, the valley stretches to the mouth of the stream in the Orb near the train station of the spa town. On its last kilometer before the mouth, the hazel flows through urban areas.

In the source area of the hazel are the Reuss beeches , several centuries old, striking red beeches .

Since the meadows are no longer used economically, nature conservation associations have introduced supportive measures to keep them open in order to preserve their original flora and to protect them from overgrowth with bracken and trees.

Infrastructure

Hunting lodge (1907) with fish breeding basin near the hazel spring

The headwaters of the Hasel can be reached by car via a narrow asphalt road and on hiking trails along the stream. At the end of the valley floor is the historic Haselruhe hunting lodge , built in 1907 by Walther vom Rath in his capacity as the hunting leaseholder of the area as a Swedish log cabin; dilapidated after the Second World War, it was restored in 1964 by the city of Bad Orb and in 1972 it was transferred to a private operator who uses it as a café-restaurant.

Approx. 1 km below the hunting lodge there is a Kneipp facility ("Förster-Storck facility") with water treading and arm plunge pools in hollowed-out tree trunks.

A fishing pond and a former mill (today a restaurant) lie in the middle of the valley; three other mills no longer exist.

In addition to guided hikes, horse rides and carriage rides are also offered as tourist activities.

Above the Haselgrund, the Spessartbogen long-distance hiking trail runs on the north side of the Wintersberg , past an abandoned red sandstone quarry with mighty stone blocks, then as a panoramic path with views into the valley, steeply down through the forest to the fishing pond and the last 1.5 km to the hunting lodge parallel to the brook. In the further course of the route, the hiking trail connects to Sölchesweiher and Mernes .

From the Reuss beeches a dead straight hiking trail leads up to the Wegscheide .
