The Hattsteinweiher near Usingen in Hessen is the only bathing lake in the Usinger Land of the eastern Hintertaunus .

history

The first source reports about the pond date from the year 1610. In the 18th century there were water pipes from the Hattsteinweiher to the city center of Usingen. Its name is derived from the Lords of Hattstein , who were burgraves in Usingen in the 15th century.

In the mid-1970s, the city undertook a major redesign and renovation. The Camping operation has been set, a sandy beach banked on the west side. As the smallest bathing lake in Hesse, the Hattsteinweiher is still a popular excursion destination, especially for stress-ridden city dwellers in the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main conurbation, who are looking for peace and relaxation in largely natural surroundings in addition to bathing fun.

Even Elvis Presley , the King of Rock'n Roll, sought peace and refuge from the ever-present fans in front of his home at Goethestrasse 14 (Bad Nauheim) during his military service in the US Army in Friedberg in August 1959 .

Elvis visited the Hattsteinweiher on or around the first anniversary of the death of his beloved mother Gladys. At this point he was suffering from emotional stress, his mood was correspondingly depressed and he wanted to avoid any hustle and bustle as much as possible. This could not be entirely successful, but Elvis came to the Hattsteinweiher several times, especially since it was not far from his 'Army Home' Friedberg / Bad Nauheim. On the one hand, the surroundings of the pond near Usingen im Taunus may have reminded him of his birthplace Tupelo , on the other hand, he had a very strange encounter here. The visits of the 'King' ensured that the level of awareness of the small lake increased significantly and that the Hattsteinweiher is of historical importance, at least for millions of Elvis fans.

use

In summer when the weather is good (and in winter as an ice skating surface) it is an attraction for many visitors from the Taunus and the Rhine-Main area . With its size of 1.6 hectares, it is the largest pond in the Hintertaunus next to the Meerpfuhl . It is an artificially created body of water that is fed from a spring stream of the Stockheimer Bach . The sports facilities of the riding, tennis and rifle clubs are in the vicinity of the pond. There are opportunities for camping at the Katharinenhof campsite, which is also located in the area of the leisure facility. Parking fees have also been charged since the early 1990s in order to reduce the number of visitors. The security service at the Hattsteinweiher and the disposal of waste in the Hattsteinweiher leisure facility are financed from the parking fees.

flora

In return, the northwest corner was designated as a protection zone and separated by interlinked tree trunks. Here a narrow silting zone has developed from broad-leaved cattails ( Typha latifolia ), various sedges and floating lawns of the rare fever clover ( Menyanthes trifoliata ). The latter also occurs on the south side and forms a narrow border here.
