Main Marshal of the Armed Forces , also Main Marshal of the Armed Forces ( Russian Гла́вный ма́ршал ро́да войск ) was the name for an independent rank of the rank group of the generals of the armed forces of the USSR . This comprised the ranks:

  • Chief Marshal of the Artillery,
  • Chief Marshal of the Aviators,
  • Chief Marshal of the Armored Forces,
  • Chief Marshal of the Engineer Forces and
  • Chief Marshal of the Intelligence Force.

The main marshal of the branch was from 1943 to 1993 the second highest rank of marshal in the Red Army and later in the Soviet Army, which according to today's understanding would correspond to the NATO rank OF-9 . The rank was one step higher than army general or marshal of the branch of service .

Introduction and precedence

With the increase in the numbers of the armed forces of the USSR, there were also demands for qualified management personnel with a corresponding alignment of the hierarchy. The Soviet state and party leadership took account of the situation by introducing new top ranks and returning to the traditional insignia of the Russian armed forces. Similar to the general ranks of the armed forces of the German armed forces and the tsarist army , various prominent ranks were created in the area of generals under the collective name of marshal or chief marshal with the addition of the military category.

The introduction of the rank class began on January 16, 1943 with the opening of the ranks Marshal of the Airmen , Marshal of the Artillery and Marshal of the Armored Forces .

On October 9, 1943, the ranks of Marshal of the Pioneer Troops and Marshal of the Telecommunications Troops followed, as well as the expansion through the introduction of the additional rank of Main Marshal of the branch of service .

In 1944 the first inductions into this rank class took place. This affected AA Nowykow and AE Golowanow, who were each promoted to Chief Marshal of the Aviators . Only in the previous year were both aviator generals appointed marshal of the aviators .

Badge of rank

The design, design and way of wearing the distinction badges were confirmed on February 6, 1943 and were modeled on those of the Marshal of the Soviet Union . Slight differences concerned the size of the marshal's star (diameter 10 mm smaller), as well as that of the troop symbol of the branch of service, in which, in contrast to the shoulder piece of the marshal of the branch, the marshal's star (small, diameter 40 mm) comprised a laurel wreath. The embroidery on the uniform collar and skirt sleeves, however, were the same.

Dismantling and abandonment

Since the rank was introduced, there have been a total of four briefings as chief marshal of the artillery , seven as chief marshal of the aviators and two as chief marshal of the armored forces . Although the rank was formally open to engineer officers and telecommunications, there were no corresponding promotions. The officers promoted in each case had previously held the rank of "Marshal of the relevant branch of service". In only one case was an army general assigned the rank of chief marshal of the artillery .

In 1984, all other main marshal ranks were given up except for the ranks of Chief Marshal of Artillery and Chief Marshal of Airmen . In 1993, however, these ranks were also abolished. The last officer to be awarded the rank of Chief Marshal of the Aviators was BP Bugaew, who died on January 13, 2007.
