Main milestone in Ludwigslust

The main milestone in Ludwigslust was built in the course of the construction of the Chaussee from Hamburg to Berlin, the course of which largely corresponds to the corresponding section of today's federal highway 5 . The obelisk of granite on the corner Grabower Allee / Techentiner street is a protected monument and the highest and oldest landmark in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

description

The main milestone with a square floor plan is composed of several granite stone blocks. The total height is 9.5 meters. Granite steps composed of several blocks are also arranged around the obelisk. At the lower end of the column are four cast-iron plates, on which are written in Arabic numbers distances in miles to Hamburg, Berlin, Schwerin and Dömitz.

history

The construction of the Chaussee from Hamburg to Berlin resulted in the first so-called Art Street in Mecklenburg between 1826 and 1829 . This led through the cities of Boizenburg, Ludwigslust and Grabow. Milestones and half-milestones were erected along the Chaussee to measure the length of the road and to indicate the distance for travelers, which have been preserved in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to this day. The German country mile was used as a measure . One mile is 7.5325 kilometers. The full milestones have cast plates with information about the distances to Hamburg, Berlin and Ludwigslust, the half milestones have cast plates with the inscription "½ M:".

In Ludwigslust, at the time the main residence of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin dynasty, a colossal granite obelisk was built at the instigation of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I. The granite blocks for this were brought in from the regions around Stolpe , Toddin and Wittenburg . Cast plates with distance information were attached to the base.

With the introduction of the metric system of units , changes were made to the distance tables around 1875.

At the end of the 1980s, the obelisk still carried signs with kilometers to Schwerin, the Dömitz state border, the Warnow state border and the Lauenburg state border.
