The main post office in Detmold is a listed secular building in Detmold in the Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

Post office from 1827 to 1890

By the middle of the 17th century at the latest, Detmold belonged to the Imperial Post Office of the Thurn and Taxis family and maintained a riding post connection to Cologne. Probably since 1827 the post office was located in a half-timbered house built in 1684 on Exterstrasse.

In Detmold, planning began for Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz in 1870 . To the northwest of the historic city walls, a new, generously designed center with municipal and sovereign offices was to be built. After the regional court and the Fürstlich-Lippische Landesspar- und Leihekasse had already been built on the south side of the square, the imperial post office building was built north of the square between 1888 and 1890 based on a design by Detmold's city architect Karl Leopold Petri .

In 1927/28 there was an extension along Bismarckstrasse for the telecommunications office and parcel handling. In contrast to the main building, this brick wing is deliberately functional.

architecture

The old building is a massive brick building in the neo-renaissance style . The base is made of embossed sandstone. The facade is richly structured with ashlar on the risalits . At the corner of Bismarckstrasse and Paulinenstrasse is the main entrance framed by columns and roofed with a triangular gable . The slightly protruding corner tower is covered with a dome-like metal roof with a flagpole on top. The two original wings of the building are arranged symmetrically, each with seven window axes and risalits on both sides. In the risalits on the upper floor, double windows with triangular gables. The middle five window axes are closed in the slate roof by dormers with a pyramid roof and a tower ball . Inside the building, the wrought-iron railings in the stairwell are still preserved, as are some doors and windows.

The extension from 1927/28 is a two-storey brick building with a high attic and seven window axes. The facade structure is reserved with decorative masonry. In the hipped roof , which is also slate , a continuous row of dormer windows runs over the five central window axes.

In the 1950s, further additions were made in the courtyard and along Bismarckstrasse as well as conversions in the extension from 1928, which are not part of the monument.
