The headquarters of the Glasgow Savings Bank is a business building in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building was built in 1865 to a design by Scottish architect John Burnet . As Glasgow Savings Bank (now part of Lloyds Bank ) grew, a flatter counter building was added on Ingram Street in 1895 . The planning was entrusted to John James Burnet , who three years later also planned the addition of a floor. After 1970 the building was restored.

description

This is the corner house between Ingram Street and Glassford Street . The Trades Hall of Glasgow and Lanarkshire House are adjacent . The three-story building is designed in the historicizing Italianate style . The east-facing main facade along Glassford Street is seven axes wide. The masonry on the ground floor is rusticated . The central entrance portal closes with a broken segmented arched gable . A cartridge in the tympanum shows a lion and a unicorn. A cornice on ornamented consoles suspects the triple window above , while the crowning of the flanking window is designed more simply. The loggia with arched windows and Doric columns comes from the extension.

There are parallels to the design of the flatter extension along Ingram Street. Its portals also close with broken segment arch gables with richly ornamented cartouches. Atlases rest on the flanking composite columns . They wear an aedicule with a sculpture of Saint Mungo , the work of the artist George Frampton . Doric and Ionic pilasters flank the windows, which are also richly ornamented. The part of the building closes with a dome. The sitting lantern is designed as a temple.
