The House of Orléans-Braganza ( Portuguese: Orléans e Bragança ) is a Brazilian branch of the former French royal house of Orléans , which inherited the claims to the throne for the Brazilian Empire, which ended in 1889, from the House of Braganza in 1891 .

origin

Crown Princess Isabella of Brazil (1846–1921)

In agnatic descent , the sex is a side branch of the former French royal house Orléans and thus belongs to the family of the Capetians . Through the female line, the family descends from the Brazilian line of the Portuguese ruling house Braganza .

The progenitor is Gaston d'Orléans, comte d'Eu , a grandson of the last French King Ludwig Philipp , who married the Brazilian Princess Isabella (Dona Isabel) , eldest daughter and designated successor of Emperor Peter II of Brazil , in 1864 . Their common descendants still place the pretenders on the Brazilian imperial throne under the name Orléans e Bragança . The monarchy in Brazil was abolished in 1889 after a military coup and replaced by a republic.

The two lines

The pretenders are split into two competing lines, descended from the two older sons of Dona Isabel. Her eldest son, Dom Pedro de Alcântara de Orléans e Bragança , Prince of Grão Para, was also her designated heir. However, in 1908, due to a morganatic marriage, he had waived his right of succession in favor of his brother, Dom Luís Maria Filipe de Orléans e Bragança . After Dom Pedro's death in 1940, his son, Dom Pedro Gastão , based on a legal opinion from the University of São Paulo, declared the waiver to be unlawful and made his own claim to pretender status. The descendants of Dom Pedro de Alcântara are known as the " Petrópolis line" because of their preferred place of residence .

A majority of Brazilian and European monarchists, however, consider Dom Pedro de Alcântara's resignation as given and recognize the rightful pretenders in the descendants of Dom Luís, who died a year before his mother. They are known as the "Vassouras Line".
