history

No. 8–12, formerly Bremer Bank

The four-storey, plastered, three-axis facade with a strong eaves cornice is the remains of a merchant's house that was built in 1857 in the Classicism era for the merchant Johann Heinrich Schmidt. The facade shows a clear division into the base, main and attic storey. Above it, the rest of a hipped roof indicates the former shape of the roof, which is much steeper today than it used to be.
From 1978 to 1982 a large extension was built for the Bremer Bank according to plans by Dietrich and Hermann . The house was demolished and then only the facade was reconstructed at its old location. This approach was also criticized by experts.

The State Office for Monument Preservation Bremen found: "... The monumental combination of the window axes on the main floor, which sits on a finely formed cornice above a meandering strip , is special ..."

Today (2018) house no.11 is used by the Barmer health insurance company . In the adjacent former Bremer Bank building at Domshof 8-12 there is u. a. the Manufactum department store branch in the former counter hall and the eight market hall in the courtyard since 2016 .
