history

Entrance No. 15

Schnoor 15 was built in 1402 as a Gothic , three-storey gabled house with a gable roof. In 1512, 1859 and 1960 there were conversions and then further renovations to the former house. The brick façades, which are now painted white, and inside the old vaults and columns with historical decor characterize the building.

The house was built at a time when the first stone Roland Roland from 1404 and the gothic Bremen town hall from 1405 to 1410 were built in the imperial city of Bremen.

The Belge , a small right branch of the Weser , ran directly in front of the Schnoorviertel. That is why river fishermen and boatmen used to live in the poor people's quarter in the small Schnoor houses, but also simple craftsmen. In the Middle Ages, the Belge was a larger watercourse in the city, which silted up over the centuries, was channeled in 1608 and completely filled in in 1838.

At the beginning of the 19th century there was intensive trade between Bremen and Brazil and the city became a stronghold for cigar makers. Cigar makers lived in many houses. The owner of house 15 named it Bremen Brasilhaus after the famous cigars from Brazil and sold groceries on the ground floor.

The Schnoor 15 house has been used by various traders over the years, and the upper floors were inhabited. Until the middle of 2010, the ground floor was used by a group of artists who traded as Galerie Artemis and then moved to the Schifferhaus , since 2012 Galerie Art 15 has been on the ground floor.

The Low German street name Schnoor ( Snoor ) means cord: Here the houses are lined up like a string. However, the name refers to the ship's craft and the manufacture of ropes and ropes (= cord).
