The House of the Mountains in Berchtesgaden is the central information and education center of the Berchtesgaden National Park . It is supplemented by five decentralized national park information points at the large national park entrances , such as the Klausbachhaus and within the national park.

history

From 1988 to 2013, the information and education center of the Berchtesgaden National Park was housed under the name National Park House in a part of the Franciscan monastery Berchtesgaden .

In 2003 Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber agreed to build a new center on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the national park. On October 4, 2010, the then Bavarian Environment Minister Markus Söder laid the foundation stone for the new environmental education and information center of the Berchtesgaden National Park, which finally opened as the House of Mountains on May 24, 2013. The House of Mountains was financed by the Free State of Bavaria , the European Union and other sponsors and supporters.

location

The house of the mountains stands on a hillside property with an unobstructed view of the Watzmann at the entrance to Berchtesgaden. The Hotel Berchtesgadener Hof was previously located on the property , which as Hotel McNair was last until 1996 part of an Armed Forces Recreation Center or the recovery center for the US armed forces stationed in Berchtesgaden and then stood empty for a long time. The area has a total area of 17,000 square meters.

Project

The Haus der Berge includes an information center, an education center and an outdoor and adventure area.

When implementing the project, emphasis was placed on a sustainable energy concept, accessibility and short distances. For the facade, materials from the region such as coniferous wood but also Korten steel were used, the natural weathering of which should reflect the basic idea of the national park “let nature be nature”.

Information center

The information center is equipped with a library and rooms for special and temporary exhibitions as well as a cinema and a café-restaurant.

The focus of the information center is the 900 m² exhibition "Vertical Wilderness", in which visitors can get to know the entire spectrum of life in the Berchtesgaden National Park on a steadily increasing hike through the habitats of water, forest, alpine pastures and rocks.

Education Centre

The education center addresses registered school classes and groups. It offers a water laboratory, the forest workshop, the meadow kitchen and a view of the rocks. The educational work in the Berchtesgaden National Park aims to convey the national park concept, to make natural interrelationships understandable, to arouse enthusiasm for nature, to stimulate discussion about oneself and one's environment and to promote environmentally conscious action and sustainable lifestyles.

Outdoor area

The outdoor area is a place to experience and learn. It is divided into an area that is open to all visitors and an area that is reserved for registered participants of events at the education center. These include the historic “Lahnerkaser”, an alpine hut from 1848, as well as the water, forest and meadow theme areas. The mountain arena, the Alpinum with numerous flowering and fern plants and the panorama path with views of the national park are open to all visitors.

criticism

The modern architectural style, especially the choice of rusting Korten steel for parts of the facade, was criticized in Berchtesgaden.

In 2017, the Bavarian Supreme Audit Office complained that by the end of 2016, € 22.7 million had already been spent on building the new House of Mountains, although the Bavarian State Parliament had capped the costs to € 19 million in 2009. The cost overrun was therefore 19.4%. The cause was considerable deviations in planning and cost from the approved HU construction .
