Mosaic from the house of the drinking competition

The House of drinking rivalry (better known as the House of the Drinking Contest ) is the modern name of a richly equipped with floor mosaics villa in Seleucia Pieria (now Turkey was excavated). The house was on a hill and overlooked the city proper and the sea not far from it.

The entrance of the house was on the west and led directly to a portico , the floor of which was decorated with mosaics and which formed the center of the house. At the other end of the house was the triclinium with a large mosaic , the center of which is the drinking contest between Dionysus and Heracles . To the south of the portico and separated from it by columns was the nymphaeum of the house, the floor of which showed a mosaic with fish. The other rooms of the house were mostly connected to the north of the portico, with two other rooms decorated with simple geometric mosaics.

The house dates to the third century AD. The mosaics are kept in a purely classical style. The large nymphaeum in the house area is particularly typical for houses belonging to a socially upper class of the population at this time.

The mosaics are now exhibited in the local museum in Antakya (Turkey), partly in Richmond (Virginia, USA) and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston .
