The Haus zum Haus is a 13th century moated castle on the Angerbach in Ratingen .

history

Presumably in the 8th century there was a Frankish settlement on the site of today's castle on a fortified crossing over the Anger .

In the 9th century a protected by palisades was at the same place Wallenburg or moth to hedge a ford over the green. In the 12th century this hill fort was completely destroyed by fire.

The moated castle was built around 1276 as the ancestral seat of the noble family "vom Haus" and was part of a series of defensive structures along the Anger, the so-called "Anger Line".

In 1474, the house was extended by Johann, who was Marshal of the Duchy of Berg at the time .

In the 16th century, the main castle was supplemented by a bailey, which was subsequently expanded with stables and other houses.

The Stroetrecht (from "Stroet" for shrub, bushes, thickets) also belonged to the house until the 19th century. This was the right to keep wild horses in the forest between Duisburg and Düsseldorf, which apart from the Duke of Berg only had a few nobility seats ( Broich , Heltorf , Böckum , Haus zum Haus, Groß-Winkelhausen , Oefte and Landsberg ).

In 1972 the then owner Graf von Spee donated the dilapidated and unusable castle to the city of Ratingen, which in turn gave it in 1973 to the architect Bruno Lambart (1924-2014) on a long lease. He restored the complex over a period of 10 years and expanded it with modern additions, which at first glance hardly stand out from the old complex and have won several architectural prizes.

Entrance to the outer bailey

Due to the numerous alterations and extensions, only some parts of the castle are still in their original state from the 13th century.

The castle complex in its current form consists of the main castle and the outer castle, both surrounded by a moat, which is no longer completely preserved.

The outer bailey does not completely surround the main castle, but only in the west and north. The main entrance to the outer bailey is from the south via a bridge through a large stone portal, for a long time the only access to the castle. The outer bailey is bordered in the north by a large former stable, which is now used as a cultural center. To the right of this is a side exit that leads to the Poensgenpark .

A bridge (formerly a drawbridge , the guides of which are still clearly visible) leads from the inside of the outer bailey into the main castle. This has three round towers and the rectangular gate tower. The south tower with a wall thickness of three meters was purely a defense tower, the other towers were also used for residential or storage purposes.

The castle wall and moat now only surround the castle by about three quarters.

Todays use

Today the castle houses a cultural center, residential buildings, a restaurant and an architecture office.

The area of the outer bailey is freely accessible day and night, the courtyard of the main castle usually during the day and at least during restaurant opening times.
