Walter Kordt

Walter Kordt (born October 13, 1899 in Düsseldorf , † June 18, 1972 ibid) was a German theater director and writer .

Life

Walter Kordt was the son of the Düsseldorf architect Wilhelm Kordt († 1931) and brother of the diplomats Erich and Theodor Kordt . He took part in the First World War as a soldier and graduated from high school in 1917 . In 1918 he began studying economics at the University of Giessen , then later in literary history and theater studies as well as art history at the universities in Frankfurt am Main , Munich and finally in Cologne , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1923 with a thesis on Grabbe . From 1922 Kordt worked under Louise Dumont as a dramaturge and assistant director at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus , in addition he wrote theater reviews for various newspapers. In 1924 he was director and dramaturge at the Aachen City Theater, 1925/26 guest director in Neuss . From 1926 to 1929 he worked as a leading director at a theater in Bad Godesberg .

After the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933, Kordt temporarily lost his position as a theater critic. He went to Berlin in 1934 , and returned to Düsseldorf in 1937; until 1939 he was again active as a critic in both cities . From 1939 to 1944 he held the position of senior director at the municipal theater in Münster / Westphalia . In 1945 he settled down as a freelance writer in Linz / Rhine , but also worked again until 1946 as a director at theaters in Munich , Wuppertal , Trier and Bremen and in 1948/49 as director of the municipal theaters in Aachen. In 1949, a serious illness put an end to his theater work.

Walter Kordt, who had also emerged as a poet in the 1920s, mainly wrote essays , non-fiction books and commemorative publications on topics from the Rhenish cultural and economic history after 1945 .
