The Haus zum Stock-im-Eisen in Arad ( Romanian Casa cu lacăt ) is a listed building on Strada Tribunul Dobra No. 7 , at the intersection with Strada Plevnei .

history

The Haus zum Stock-im-Eisen was built in 1815 by the Viennese businessman Josef Winkler and renovated in 1851, as can be read on the house gable. At the corner of Strada Plevnei there is a niche in which there was a tree trunk covered with thin sheet iron, the stick-in-iron. This was made in 1927 by the Timisoara sculptor Moritz Heim on behalf of the Mazedo-Romanian Andrei Trandafir based on the Viennese model .

The stick-in-iron was studded with innumerable nails and held in place by an iron bracket on the outside wall of the house. The iron shackle was fitted with a large square padlock which, however, could not be opened due to the lack of a keyhole. In 1994 the stick-in-iron disappeared temporarily. After it was found, it was brought to the museum of the Arad Palace of Culture for restoration and has been on display since then.

Such house signs were not uncommon in Austria-Hungary in the 18th century . Similar house signs can also be found in Austria ( Vienna ), Hungary ( Budapest , Győr , Székesfehérvár ), Slovakia ( Bratislava ) and also in Romania ( Timișoara and Oradea ).

During the Revolution of 1848 , the Austrian Imperial Secret Service had its headquarters in the building, while the cellar of the house served as a prison for numerous revolutionaries.

The stick-in-iron comes from the time of the guilds in Arad. Every apprentice had to travel the country before he made his journeyman's piece in order to learn his trade properly. The stick-in-iron served the budding journeyman to stamp his guild mark on the stick in order to perpetuate his presence in the respective city. In the course of time, the stick-in-iron was covered with a wide variety of guild signs. This custom lasted until 1872 when guilds were abolished by law.
