Medicine cabinet
The medicine cabinet is a container for storing a collection of frequently used medicines and bandages for first aid and home care in the private household .
In the other sense, the term house pharmacy is used for a pharmacy shop close to home or the veterinary house pharmacy .
In a figurative sense, home pharmacy is also used to describe nursing at home .
Private medicine cabinet (medicine cabinet)
In Austria, pharmacies have been offering information brochures for private medicine cabinets for a long time. B. to draw attention to the adverse consequences of expired drugs . Tips for the type of storage and the most important content are also given.
- simple bandages such as gauze bandages etc. are best equipped according to DIN 13164 (Germany) or ÖNORM Z 1020 (Austria).

- Pain and fever suppositories (or as juice)
- Burn and wound gel
- Ointment for bruising
- Cough syrup and nasal drops ( replace the latter after use)
- Sore throat tablets
- Electrolyte solutions against diarrheal Conditional electrolyte loss
- Remedies for itching and insect bites
- laxative
- Medicines for pain, fever and colds
- Remedies for diarrhea and indigestion
- Wound disinfectant
- Wound healing agent for scratches, abrasions, cuts and burns
- Bandage material, first aid bandage (plaster)
As well as your own preferred or prescribed medication.
Others:
- Medical thermometer (preferably digital)
- tweezers
- scissors
- Tick tongs (or tick card)
The Lower Austrian Civil Protection Association further recommends for the medicine cabinet:
- Potassium iodide tablets
- Chamomile drops
- Alcohol 70%
- Wound and healing ointment
- Valerian drops
- Hydrogen peroxide 3%
- Mineral spirits
Other Recommendations:
- Store in a cool, dry place - e.g. B. in the bedroom (kitchen or bathroom are inconvenient)
- Lockable, child-proof cabinet (installation height over 1½ meters), hang the key above
- Store medication only in the original packaging and with the instruction leaflet , check the expiry date regularly
- Telephone number of family doctor and pediatrician , nearest hospital , pharmacy, emergency and poison control (clearly visible inside in the cupboard)
Medicine cabinet in Austria
In Austria, the term house pharmacy is also understood to mean the medical house pharmacy. A medical house pharmacy is a classic pharmacy that is run by a doctor.
